What do Elf, Black Panther, Get Out, and Jurassic Park have in common? The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra

Will Ferrell is in his Buddy the Elf costume and he stands atop a Wakanda hilltop with a spear. In the backdrop, oil-chested Jeff Goldblum braces himself next to a screaming Laura Dern as they escape a T-rex in a Jeep. Nonchalantly in the middle of this mayhem, Daniel Kaluuya gets hypnotized in an armchair by Catherine Keener as she stirs her tea.

Unfortunately, this piece of chaos cinema hasn’t been practically realized yet. But take each film individually, and you’ve got four movies with pretty kick-butt scores. It’s a wonderful pastime when a beloved film revisits your local theatre for a brief weekend run, the way you might see Jaws return for a Fourth of July nostalgia visit. The only thing that could possibly amplify this experience – besides a bucket of cholesterol disguised as popcorn – would be the power of a live orchestral score.

Over the next six months, New Orleans moviegoers can experience exactly that.

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will perform live to Get Out, Jurassic Park, Elf, and Black Panther at well-known theaters around New Orleans as part of its 2023-2024 concert season. The dates and venues will be as follows:

  • The LPO will perform Michael Abel’s tension-wrought score for Get Out live to the film on Thursday, October 12th at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, October 13th at 7:30 p.m. at The Orpheum Theater, featuring Conductor and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director Matthew Kraemer. Tickets are available here.
  • John William’s sweeping score for Jurassic Park will be performed on Saturday, November 18th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 19th at 2 p.m. live to the film at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts, featuring Conductor Julian Pellicano. Tickets are available here.
  • Aligning with the weekend before Christmas, the LPO will perform John Debney’s score live to Elf on Friday, December 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at The Saenger Theater. Tickets for this event are available exclusively through The Saenger Theater here.
  • The concert series will conclude with performances of Ludwig Göransson’s 2019 Oscar-winning score for Black Panther. The final pair of performances will run on Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 10th at 2 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts, featuring Conductor Thiago Tiberio. Tickets are available here.

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra performs a prolific 36-week season throughout the year that includes more than 120 performances in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. A full list of their upcoming events – which range from operas to local happy hours – can be viewed here.

A film draws power from its score. The tremble of a T-rex stomping through jungle is felt in the strings, and the impending basement lobotomy of a protagonist grips our minds with haunted flutters.

We may derive meaning from the actors and the script, but our worst fears and joys are electrified in the sound.
